There are, however, some frequency segments that can be used without the direct approval of appropriate each government entities: the bands ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical), which can operate, among others, the following intervals:

  • 902 MHz – 928 MHz; 2.4 GHz
  • 2.485 GHz and 5.15 GHz – 5.825 GHz

Notably, depending on the country, these limits may vary. The last two fringe are used by the Wi-Fi, however, this feature may vary according to the version of the 802.11 standard.

It is good to know that, for a network of this type is established, it is necessary that the devices (also called STA – of “station”), they must be connected to devices that provide access.

How WiFi works

These are generically called Access Point (AP). When one or more STA connected to an AP, is obtained a network, which is called a Basic Service Set (BSS). For security and the possibility to be more of a BSS in a certain place (for example, two wireless networks created by different companies in an area event), it is important that each receives an exclusive ID, called Service Set Identifier (SSID), a character set that after defined, is inserted into each data packet network. In other words, the SSID is simply the name given to each wireless network.
