It is no use a powerful processor without a good amount of RAM to accompany them. In this article we will learn the basics about RAM and its relationship with the PC.

What is RAM

The RAM, also known by the meaning of this acronym, Random Access Memory, is used by the system to process all the information passing through our PC, so all programs need it to run, and it is perhaps the most important element of all that integrates a computer.

It is well known to all that the more RAM, the better the performance of a computer, and that is why today is normal to find PCs that have 16 Gb. RAM or more. Obviously more RAM, the faster we can do our daily work. However, the RAM must be accompanied by an appropriate motherboard, a fast processor and a hard drive capacity and good speed, preferably of the type SSD (Solid State Drive).

In the event that our tasks include video processing, video games or any other situation in which a large amount of processing is required, many users, along with a lot of RAM, also add a powerful video card, which it is very useful for this kind of work because it lightens the processor load.

Physically, RAM is a piece of hardware that is inserted into the sockets that the motherboard includes for this. Basically, the RAM works by storing the instructions to be executed by the microprocessor at every moment. Hence the importance of speed.

Differences between a hard drive and SSD

A few years ago, the documents produced in our work were stored in hardware devices that had the same storage capacity than a smartphone today.

With the passage of time, there were developed new and varied possibilities in storage technologies, which brought about new nomenclatures that define each. In this article we will describe what are the differences and similarities between HD and SSD.


The HD (Hard Disk or Hard Drive) is a storage unit that found inside of desktops PC, notebooks and netbooks, and are the responsible for the data storage. This memory is nonvolatile, meaning that data is not lost if the computer is off.

All data are recorded on magnetic disks, while thinner are the magnetic plates of hard disk, the better the recording. Depending on the characteristics of these plates, the hard disk can have very different storage capacities.

Typically, the PC types that use an hard disk are the conventional computers, the All in one (all in one) and notebooks. They need this kind of disks to perform its functions, which are normally more demanding than tablets and smartphones.


SSD stands for Solid State Drive. Its construction is based on a semiconductor integrated circuit, constructed in one piece. Unlike conventional hard disks, where storage is performed by magnetic disks, SSDs can use flash memory (such as SD cards cameras).

Having no electromechanical components for reading files, SSDs are completely silent. This also facilitates access to data, a very important point for those who need speed (unlike hard disks, where the mechanical reading arm needs to go from one end to another to read certain information) the SSD units has everything at hand.

It also works with less heat and consume less energy. However, the storage capacity is much lower than it can deliver a hard disk and its cost is higher.


Computers that more use SSDs are smartphones, tablets and netbooks, not to mention digital cameras, which use this type of storage. All these types of equipment do not need a very large storage capacity, but need the response time as fast as possible.

With respect to price, a conventional hard disk can be much cheaper than an SSD, even with a larger capacity. Currently the hard disk can be found up to 4 Tb (equivalent to approximately 4000 Gb), while the SSD that are commonly used are 120 Gb, 240 Gb, up to 1Tb or more.



The truth is that there is no better or worse storage for our documents, it all depends mainly on the needs of each user. For example, if you need to store large video, with high quality, the SSD is not recommended, since the size of the videos would be enormous.

However, in a tablet, where the team size is small and the response time needs to be fast, SSDs are better.

Basically, a storage unit is a device able to read and write data for the purpose of permanent storage. Today we have available many classes and categories of this storage devices, and can find in computer stores a wide variety, both internals and externals, capable of storing an amount of data unthinkable in the past.

Also called secondary storage, these devices are capable of storing data inside, as in the case of hard drives, memory cards and USB flash drives, or as in the case of optical storage drives such as Blu-Ray, DVD or CD disc, which store data externally on a removable media, such as disk.

The ability to store information for later retrieval simple is an essential link in any modern computer system, and the storage devices play a major role in the development of technology, because without them it would be impossible even attempting any project, however small it may be.
